Pavers
Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to our Pavers FAQ! Here you'll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive about pavers and their installation.
1
What are pavers?
Pavers are a type of hardscape material typically used for outdoor flooring. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures, and can be made from concrete, clay, natural stone, or porcelain.
2
What are the benefits of using pavers?
Pavers are a durable and versatile option for outdoor flooring. They can withstand heavy foot traffic, resist weather damage, and are easy to replace if needed. Additionally, pavers are available in a wide range of colors and patterns, allowing for endless design possibilities.
3
What is the difference between grey cement cement and white cement pavers?
While there is no structural or mechanical difference between grey cement pavers and those made from white cement, grey pavers tend to have a darker color. As a result, they are often used for driveways, while white cement pavers are more commonly used for pool decks and patios since they absorb less heat.
4
What is the thickness of the pavers?
Residential driveway pavers are typically 60mm (2 3/8") thick, while commercial driveway pavers are usually 80mm (3 1/8") thick. In addition, remodel pavers can be installed over existing concrete patios and pool decks using a mudset technique. These pavers are thinner, usually measuring 30mm (1 3/16") in thickness.
5
What are natural stone pavers?
Pavers can also be made from natural stones such as travertine, marble, limestone, and flagstone, which are cut into various shapes, colors, and sizes. Installation of these pavers is similar to that of standard 30mm (1 3/16") pavers. Due to their high-end materials, the price of natural stone pavers may vary depending on market conditions, but they add a timeless, natural aesthetic to any installation.
6
What are porcelain pavers?
Porcelain pavers are man-made pavers that come in varying thicknesses depending on the intended use (2cm, 3cm, or 5cm). They can be used on decks, driveways, and patios, and come in large formats. Installation is similar to that of natural stone pavers, but careful attention should be paid to cuts, joint sand, and edge restraints to ensure proper leveling. Unlike natural stone pavers, porcelain pavers do not need to be sealed, but they do require maintenance like any other outdoor surface exposed to the elements.
7
Do pavers need a permit to be installed?
In Palm Beach County, most paver installation projects require a permit, which can take several days to weeks for approval. Additionally, a survey is typically required before installation can begin. Permitting costs and survey fees are not included in the initial quote and will be charged separately at the end of the project, once all fees have been assessed. Homeowners are responsible for obtaining any necessary HOA approvals, but Kronos Builders can provide assistance in securing all necessary insurances, licenses, and drawings.
8
How long does it take to install pavers?
The installation time for pavers can vary depending on the size of the area being covered and the complexity of the design. However, most installations can be completed within a few days to a week.
9
How are pavers installed?
Pavers are typically installed on top of a compacted base of gravel and sand, with a border of concrete or other edging material to hold them in place. The exact installation process may vary depending on the specific project and materials used.
10
How do I maintain my pavers? How about sealing pavers?
To ensure the longevity and beauty of your pavers, regular maintenance is essential. This may include sweeping or blowing off debris, periodically washing the surface, and filling in any gaps or cracks that may develop over time. Additionally, all pavers can be sealed. However, it's important to note that sealing of new pavers must occur at least 30 to 60 days after installation for technical reasons such as efflorescence and curing. On the other hand, sealing of travertine and other natural stones can be done right after installation. Sealing will alter the surface characteristics of pavers and make them more slippery. Some sealers can enhance the paver's color, while others maintain their natural appearance.
